Preparing Your Pool For Spring

After a long winter, we're ready for backyard BBQ's and chilling out pool side! If you've bought a home over the winter and it came with a winterized pool, we have some great tips on getting it up and running for when the warmer weather is here.

1. POOL COVER

If your pool has a winter or solid safety cover, you will need to drain the water resting on top. Remove as much debris as possible so that it won't fall into the pool when removing the cover. Carefully remove the cover and give it a good spray down and let it dry before storing away for the summer months. Use the net to skim off as much debris as possible.

2. WATER LEVEL

Using a garden hose, fill the water level in your pool back to the normal level (middle of the skimmer opening). This will take awhile - but be sure to set a timer to check every half hour or so - you don't want to forget about it and have it overflow! (Not that we've ever done that...)


​3. RECONNECT THE POOL EQUIPMENT

This included connecting the filter, pump, heater and anything else the pool requires to run. Be sure to inspect everything before hooking it all up and remove any winter plugs and re-attach drain plugs, if applicable. (Above ground pool tip - we found Vaseline to be helpful in putting together the filter cover if it's a tight fit. It also makes removal for cleaning and storing in Fall that much easier!).

4. TURN ON YOUR POOL SYSTEM

Now you can turn on your pool system, which includes priming the pump and turning on the filtration and circulation system. 

5. TEST POOL CHEMISTRY

Once the circulation system has run for a few hours, use the appropriate testing strips for your pool and test for pH, Chlorine levels and Total Alkalinity - we always take a water sample to our local pool store and their experts tell us exactly what is needed. This is highly recommended to be sure that your first swim will be a pleasant one and that your pool equipment won't be damaged. Be sure to take the water sample 1 foot from the surface to get an accurate sample. 

6. ADD POOL CHEMICALS

It is very important to add the chemicals to your pool in the correct amount, order and time in between. If you are at all unsure, the experts at your local pool supply store will be able to provide you with step-by-step directions if you've brought in your pool water sample.

7. VACUUM AND BRUSH THE POOL

Once your pool's chemistry has been adjusted, you can hook up your brush and vacuum to remove any remaining dirt and debris.

8. RUN SYSTEM OVERNIGHT

After brushing and vacuuming, there may still be some dirt, debris, algae and bacteria floating around - the filtration system running overnight (or for at least 8 hours) will filter this out.

9. CHECK CHEMICAL LEVELS AND SHOCK THE POOL

Check levels again and shock the pool (if needed). Be sure to closely follow the instructions with your chlorine shock product to determine how much will need to be added. Let the system circulate for the recommended time.

​10. SET TIMER AND ENJOY!

​Now it's time to enjoy all of your hard work! Set up a timer to circulate the swimming pool water for 6-12 hours per day (depending on the size of your pool). If your water starts to turn green or cloudy, adjust the chemicals, bypass the timer and let it run for 24 hours. 

​Once your pool is opened the right way, the stage will be set for easy maintenance for the rest of the season! Enjoy your crystal-clear pool all summer long!!
